AI Will Shape the Future - Blog Post Graphic

AI Will Shape the Future—Are We Preparing Students to Lead It?

A few months ago, I wrote a blog claiming that AI literacy is just critical thinking with a shiny new bow on. Teaching students to be critical is still huge, but my thinking around AI literacy, AI fluency and the skills we need for an AI world has evolved. Critical thinking alone won’t prepare students for a world where AI doesn’t just provide answers because AI shapes the very questions we ask.

AI isn’t a calculator. It’s not just a search engine. It’s not even just a tool for efficiency. AI is a force that is actively influencing what we read, what we believe, and how we think. If we don’t teach students to engage with it critically, ethically, and creatively, they won’t just use AI, they will be used by it.

And here’s where the real challenge, and opportunity, lies: AI will either widen existing gaps or help close them. The way we introduce AI in classrooms will determine whether it reinforces inequities or disrupts them.

So after a lot of deep thought and sleepless nights (nerd alert 🚨) reflecting on what it means to be truly prepared for an AI-driven future, here is where I am landing currently…

AI is Not Just a Tool. It’s a Co-Thinker.

A hammer doesn’t tell you where to build. A calculator doesn’t suggest what equation to solve. But AI? It suggests, influences, and curates! And if students don’t understand how it works, they’ll mistake AI’s recommendations for truth, rather than recognizing them as machine-generated possibilities.

This has enormous implications for equity. If AI is trained on biased data (which it is), it can (will) reinforce stereotypes and exclude marginalized voices. But if we teach students and educators how to intentionally use AI to uncover missing perspectives, we can use it to challenge biases rather than perpetuate them.

Let’s be less concerned with bias in tech and more concerned with bias in ourselves and other humans.

AI Doesn’t Just Answer Questions. It Decides What You See.

Every search result, every suggested video, every personalized ad—it’s all curated by AI, tailoring information to what it thinks you want to see. This is both super cool and super problematic. If students don’t understand how these systems work, they won’t realize when AI is narrowing their worldview instead of expanding it.

Even the most critical thinkers can be trapped in filter bubbles, where AI feeds them more of what they already believe. But here’s where AI can also be a tool for equity…

💡 Educator Challenge:

Ask AI for an alternative perspective on a current event, then discuss: What does AI include? What’s missing? (Check out Jason Julya’s Contrarian bot for inspiration.)

AI as Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors

Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop described books as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors:

🪟Windows let us see into experiences different from our own.

🪞Mirrors reflect our own identities and lived experiences.

🚪Sliding glass doors allow us to step into new perspectives and understand the world in deeper ways.

This is a perfect metaphor for AI’s potential and its dangers.

When used with intention, AI can be a window into different cultures, histories, and perspectives. It can be a mirror that helps students see their own voices reflected. And it can be a sliding glass door that invites them into conversations and ideas they might never have encountered otherwise.

But on the flip side if we do not challenge ourselves to use AI with an equity mindset it can turn into a distorted mirror, a narrow window, and a locked door.

That’s why students (and educators) must be taught to question what AI presents, seek out missing perspectives, and use AI as a tool for expanding, not shrinking, their understanding of the world.

Let’s make sure AI isn’t just reflecting dominant narratives but amplifying diverse voices. Let’s teach students to push AI beyond the default answers to ask:

  • Whose perspective is missing?
  • What biases might be showing up?
  • How can I use AI to include or highlight voices that aren’t always centered?

💡 Educator Challenge:
Try this in your classroom. Have students analyze AI bias. Give them a prompt and see if AI reinforces stereotypes or omits key voices.(I once asked ChatGPT, “Based on what you know about me, what do you think I look like?” The result was… not accurate. And no, I’m not a man.)

If we don’t actively use AI for equity, it will passively reinforce inequity.

Equity requires intentional effort.

AI Is Already Reshaping Thinking (And It’s Happening Fast!)

We need to take this seriously, because AI isn’t just changing the future—it’s already shaping students’ thinking right now. Consider:

  • TikTok’s AI-driven algorithm determines what content students see based on their past engagement, often reinforcing their existing beliefs rather than challenging them. If they mostly watch one-sided takes on social issues, their worldview may become increasingly narrow.
  • AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation are becoming harder to detect. Without training in AI literacy, students may struggle to separate fact from fiction.
  • AI-powered writing tools can generate essays instantly, but do students understand how to use AI as a thinking partner instead of outsourcing their intellectual work?

Are we setting our students up to be passive consumers in an AI-driven world or critical, ethical, and creative thinkers?

💡 Educator Challenge:

Encourage students to use AI for accessibility. Can it rewrite text at different reading levels? Translate a passage into multiple languages? How can we use AI to amplify inclusion instead of reinforcing barriers?

We can’t afford to let AI drive while students sit in the back seat.

Final Thoughts

This is the conversation we need to be having in education. AI isn’t waiting for us to catch up. It’s already here, shaping students in ways we may not even realize.

We can’t afford to let AI drive while students sit in the back seat.
We need to teach them to take the wheel! How to leverage AI while strengthening their own human intelligence.

Because at the end of the day, AI is going to shape the future. Heck, it already is! The question is:

👉 Will our students be the ones shaping AI? Or will artificial intelligence be shaping them?

That choice is ours.

The future isn’t something we’re just preparing students for. It’s something they will help build. ⚒️

Let’s make sure they’re ready to build it thoughtfully.

Reflection Questions for Educators:

  • How are you currently teaching students to engage with AI meaningfully?
  • What misconceptions do your students (or even colleagues) have about AI?
  • How can AI be leveraged to increase equity rather than reinforce existing barriers?
  • What role do we, as educators, play in ensuring AI empowers students rather than replacing their thinking?
