As we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on our lives, it is crucial that we, as educators and schools, take on the role of catalysts in empowering families to become AI-informed and engaged.
Parents as AI Education Leaders
When I first explored the potential of artificial intelligence in parenting, my focus was primarily on the practical ways in which tools like ChatGPT could support parents in their daily challenges. From providing advice and parenting strategies to offering resources for learning and development, AI seemed like a promising tool for helping parents navigate the complexities of raising children in the modern world.
However, as I’ve continued to engage with AI over the past year, my understanding of its role in parenting has dramatically expanded and evolved. While the practical applications remain valuable, I’ve come to see AI as more than just a source of advice. Instead, I’ve begun to view it as a partner in the emotional and psychological work of parenting, one that can help us cultivate greater self-awareness, empathy, and resilience in ourselves and our children. And I’ve spoken to many parents who feel the same, and I’ve included their stories in this volume.
With all the debate about AI in schools, what if we rather focused on making every household AI empowered? From co-constructing weekly meal plans to processing difficult emotions together, AI can be an incredible partner in family life. And if we did that, maybe we wouldn’t even need all this debate about AI in schools. Every child’s first school is their home.
Human Intelligence and AI Empowered Parents
This is where the Human Intelligence Movement comes in. As parents, it’s crucial to remember our humanity and lead our children with that in mind. We shouldn’t simply assume that those in schools know better. The Human Intelligence Movement reminds us that, as parents, we have the power to shape our children’s lives and futures. By embracing our humanity and using AI as a tool to support us, we can create a nurturing environment that fosters emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and adaptability in our children.
Our kids’ futures are on a knife edge. Around the world we are acting like the violence our kids watch and experience everyday is an acceptable side effect of our need to establish superiority over one another. Climate catastrophe is all but inevitable. And yet we have at our disposal the promise of giving our kids a chance. By joining the Human Intelligence Movement and integrating AI into our parenting, we can create a future that is more equitable, more sustainable, and more human for our children.
I’ll leave you with an excerpt from my newly released second edition of “The AI Parent”. It’s an opening letter I write to parents reading the book. It’s a vulnerable place to talk about something so personal in a space like AI, but I think the more parents take this on as a personal, family issue, the better our chances of making this paradigm shift a beautiful one for our kids.
A Letter to My Fellow Parents
I am not here to teach you something you don’t already feel deep within your heart. You, as a parent, have an innate wisdom that guides you, even when the world around you seems to pull you in different directions. Please join me in a moment of reflection.
Think back to those moments when your child’s imagination soared, when their creativity fully took over, and when their curiosity led them down paths that might have “gotten them in trouble” at school. Remember the joy, the wonder, and the pure magic of those experiences. When you had trouble keeping the excitement and laughter inside while recounting the story to friends and family. “I shouldn’t be laughing, but my kid….” That is the essence of childhood, the thing we try so hard to nurture and protect.
Yet, so often, we find ourselves tamping down our children’s natural inclinations, urging them to focus on grades, to follow external rules, and to fit into a mold that society has deemed acceptable. It hurts us in ways we can’t fully articulate, a pain that stems from our own childhood traumas and the pressure we feel to be a certain kind of parent.
We create mental models to cope with this dissonance, to justify the way we guide our children, even when it goes against our instincts. But what if there was another way? What if we could break free from these patterns and embrace a new paradigm of parenting?
In a world where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, our children’s creativity, imagination, and unique perspectives are superpowers. The rules are changing, and the skills that once guaranteed success may no longer be relevant. Instead, it is our children’s ability to think differently, to ask bold questions, and to fearlessly explore the unknown that will set them apart.
As parents, we have the opportunity to nurture these qualities, to create a safe space where our children can be unapologetically themselves. We can let go of the trauma-informed ways of parenting that have been passed down through generations and embrace a new approach, one that honors our children’s inherent wisdom, and one that celebrates what makes them unique and divergent.
This is not about perfection or having all the answers. It’s about trusting ourselves, our children, and the journey we are on together. It’s about recognizing that the world is changing, and that we have the power to change with it, to create a new reality for our families.
So, to you, dear parent, I offer this invitation: release the weight of expectations, the burden of societal pressure, and the fear of judgment. Embrace the unique gifts your child brings to the world, and trust that their path, while perhaps unconventional, is exactly the one they are meant to walk.
And embrace your unique gifts as a parent. You are, and always have been, a singular person in this world. Embracing the things that make you think and the things that make you dance – and sharing that with your kids – is the kind of leadership that our kids need more than ever.
You are not alone in this journey. We are all learning, growing, and healing together. And as we do, we are paving the way for a new generation of children who are empowered to be themselves and to make a difference in ways we can’t even imagine.
Let this be a moment of awakening, a chance to reconnect with your own inner child, your own creativity and curiosity. Let it be a reminder that parenting is not about molding our children into something they are not, but about nurturing the massive humanity that already lives within them.
You are doing a great job, even when it doesn’t feel like it. You are exactly the parent your child needs, and together, you are embarking on a beautiful, messy, and miraculous adventure.
So take a deep breath, trust your heart, and know that you are not just raising a child, but a whole new world of possibilities.
With love and solidarity,
Your fellow parent on this incredible journey.
